The Carlyle, the project presented an extremely unusual challenge for us. How do you renovate something that everybody loves deeply? People appreciate The Carlyle for its sense of history, and for what it is, as sort of an untouched gem. It has a bar that is universally recognized as a New York bar. It also has the Cafe Carlyle that has been home to so many luminaries and great performers, in one of the most intimate clubs in New York. These are things that you cannot touch without destroying, so we wanted to channel those pieces of heritage and bring some of that romance into the rooms, which had grown tired over the years. It was an unusual design challenge and an extraordinary honor to have been asked as a studio to take on the project.
